Questions
Does my audio leave my Mac?
Not when you record on your Mac. Without an account, Personal Notes runs entirely on your device: notes, recordings and transcripts are stored locally and processed by the on-device speech model. Local mode never uploads your audio or your notes to us or to anyone else.
Does Talk need the internet?
Yes. Talk and instant streaming transcription are Pro features that run in the cloud on OpenAI GPT-Live (GPT-Live 1 for the conversation, GPT-Live-Transcribe for transcription), so they need a connection and Pro credits. Record and your notes keep working with no connection.
What leaves my Mac when I use Pro?
Talk and cloud transcription are optional and off until you use them. When you do, your audio is uploaded to our servers and sent to OpenAI, which acts as our subprocessor to transcribe it and generate responses. OpenAI processes this data under its API terms and does not use API data to train its models by default. If you do not want audio to leave your Mac, record on your Mac: local Record never uploads anything. The Privacy Policy has the details.
Can the agent make mistakes in my notes?
Yes, AI output can be wrong, so check anything important. Every change the agent makes appears in Activity, where you can see what changed and undo it.
Do I need an account?
No. The Mac app is fully usable without one. You only create an account if you choose Personal Notes Pro, which is $10 per month with 1,000 credits each month; see Pricing.
